How to Get Started

How old do I have to be?

It doesn't matter, but you should have a good background or have taken enough related coursework.

What hours can I do research work?

What will a professor expect my skillsets/qualifications to be?

How many hours / week should I expect to commit?

Different mentors will expect different ranges of weekly hours, but this is usually flexible from week to week, depending on deadlines.

What if I am an international student? Citizenship?

International students can do research work on campus as part of their Curricular Practical Training. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is only available to F-1 students who have not graduated and who have been enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year (i.e. fall and spring.)

Connect

What is the best way to approach a professor?

What if I get blocked if I reach out to a professor?

How can I get connected with other students doing research?

How do I know who's a "cool" professor open to new research ideas?
